SAFE AND HEALTHY FAMILIES

Famålao’an Rights believes that true reproductive freedom can be achieved only when every resident on Guam has the ability to affordable and accessible resources to make their own decisions about their bodies and families, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, economic situation or immigration status.

We know that restrictions to access reproductive health care, including abortion, disproportionately burden low-income communities, immigrants as well as queer and trans individuals. We are proud to begin this grassroots initiative that will center and uplift members of our island community who are mostly impacted by discriminatory policies and laws that leave the most vulnerable with few real choices when it comes to their reproductive lives.

CONTRACEPTION

Many elements need to be considered by women, men, or couples when choosing the most appropriate contraceptive method. These elements include safety, effectiveness, availability (including accessibility and affordability).

Dual protection from the simultaneous risk for HIV and other STDs also should be considered. Although hormonal contraceptives and IUDs are highly effective at preventing pregnancy, they do not protect against STDs, including HIV.

Consistent and correct use of the male latex condom reduces the risk for HIV infection and other STDs, including chlamydial infection, gonococcal infection, and trichomoniasis.

Below are methods of birth control as advised by the Center for for Disease Control and Prevention.

SEX EDUCATION

Building An Evidence & Fact Based Sex Education Program Is Essential

Growing up, young people face important, and often times, life-altering decisions about relationships, sexuality, and sexual behavior. The decisions they make can impact their well-being and health for the rest of their lives.

Young people have the right to lead healthy lives, and those in positions to so (as well as ourselves) have the responsibility to prepare them by providing comprehensive sexual health education that gives them the necessary tools to make healthy decisions. But it is not enough for programs to include discussions of contraception and abstinence to help young people avoid unintended pregnancy or diseases. Comprehensive sexual health education must also provide young people with honest, age-appropriate information and skills necessary to help them take personal responsibility for their health and overall well being.
